Meet Dr. Hawken

Jennifer Hawken, MD is a fellowship-trained psychiatrist who holds three board certifications: Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. She is a native of Northern Virginia.

She attended college at Georgetown University. She studied Biology of Global Health and graduated with honors. She obtained her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. There, she was recognized for academic excellence and inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She matched at Brown University for psychiatry residency and then completed a Consultation-Liaison fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time in nature, and going for walks. 

About The Practice

This is an intentionally small and patient-focused practice. Dr. Hawken’s top practice priority is safety. The core values of her practice are compassion, advocacy, and quality. 

Dr. Hawken emphasizes a whole-person, holistic approach to mental health care. She will work with you on a collaborative treatment plan that prioritizes well-being and recovery.

Dr. Hawken sees patients for a variety of conditions including depression, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. Dr. Hawken has expertise in treating individuals with co-occurring medical conditions, women’s mental health, and in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

If an individual needs extensive support such as wrap around services, home visits, case management, or is at high risk for suicide, self-harm, hospitalization, etc. then they may not be appropriate for the practice.

Services & Pricing

Initial 15-Minute Consultation Call – Free
All prospective clients will begin treatment with a free 15-minute consultation call, to discuss your situation and needs, your hopes and expectations for treatment, and to assess if Dr. Hawken’s practice is a good fit for you. This is also time to briefly review practice policies and if appropriate, schedule a comprehensive intake evaluation.
Comprehensive Psychiatric Intake, 60 Minutes - $325
Each new patient will begin treatment with an initial evaluation, reviewing medical, psychiatric, educational and developmental histories. As a part of the evaluation, Dr. Hawken will also ask to review your prior medical records. This is an extremely important aspect of treatment. Dr. Hawken will also coordinate care with your medical team, your therapist, and any important supports such as friends or family if appropriate.
Medication Management Only, 25 Minutes - $175
Dr. Hawken offers medication management services. During these appointments, she assesses for and treats mental health conditions with psychiatric medications and targeted brief psychotherapy. Dr. Hawken sees patients monthly at minimum. If you do not need ongoing monthly visits, you can discuss a transfer plan to your primary care practitioner or another provider.
Medication Management Only, 35+ Minutes - $225
For medication management that is more complex or involved, Dr. Hawken offers flexibility in appointment duration. Longer appointments may be needed if there are others involved in your care (e.g. a caregiver, friend, or family member), if there are multiple conditions being addressed, or for other reasons.
Psychotherapy, 50 Minutes - $250
Dr. Hawken is trained in multiple talk therapy modalities and utilizes a strengths-focused and recovery-oriented approach. Her primary style tends to be psychodynamic psychotherapy however treatment is individualized for each patient and situation. Psychotherapy can be provided with or without medication management.
Lifestyle Psychiatry - coming soon
For much of medicine's history there was believed to be a divide between the mind and body. Now, there is wider awareness that what is good for your body is good for your brain. Dr. Hawken has expertise in the mind-body connection and will work with you to complete a thorough evaluation and assessment of your lifestyle and habits, prioritizing your sleep, diet, exercise, and social connections. Together you will develop a plan to optimize your overall wellness. Depending on the individual this approach may include guidance on diet, exercise, sleep, and medications.
